¡Hola! My name is Srta. McNamara and I am very excited to be your Spanish teacher this semester! One of the goals of education, especially currently, is to prepare students to become "global citizens;" that is, able to see issues from multiple perspectives and collaborate successfully with people that are culturally different from them. Learning a foreign language opens up quite literally a whole world of opportunities and people with whom to communicate and that is the beauty of it! Knowing Spanish is a very marketable skill, no matter what field you choose to go into and also makes travel to Spanish-speaking countries much more enjoyable, as you'll feel less like a tourist!
Even after just one semester of studying Spanish, you will have acquired lots of vocabulary and be prepared for basic conversations on a variety of topics. You will impress yourself by how, after just a short while in class, you will start to understand instructions that I give completely in Spanish and you will have fun saying sentences not only in class, but also at home to family and pets - whether or not they understand :) (I still have fun rattling off sentences that I learned in French 1!). The more you put into learning Spanish, the more you will get out of it. Many people told me in college that they wish they had put more effort into learning Spanish when they had the opportunity. Now is your opportunity, so take it and have fun with it!
I began learning Spanish informally in middle school, took Spanish 1 through 4 in high school and earned my BA in Spanish Language and Literature from NC State University. While at NCSU, I had the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Costa Rica for a semester - the best experience of my life! The pictures on this website are pictures that I took in Costa Rica :)
